Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This lecture has two goals: First, to show the bandwidth of the research area mathematics education. Second, to give practical tipps, suggestions, and hints for your own teaching and your work in school (which might be somewhat lacking in other parts of the study programme).First goal (theory): Mathematics education as a research area tackles a number of questions and topics. Most well-known is probably topic-specific didactics (How can I teach a certain topic? Where do I have to pay particular attention? What difficulties occur? Which basic conceptions exist for this topic? Which misconceptions occur? …). But research is also done about a lot of other aspects of teaching and learning mathematics, e.g. multilinguality, use of technology, math anxiety, dyscalculia, assessment, real world applications, motivation, gender aspects, final exam, international comparisons, and many others. One lecture can of course not take into consideration all of these aspects, but some of them will be shown exemplary. Hence, each lecture unit will (as a self-contained presentation) shed light on one aspect of mathematics education. Guest lecturers will further enrich this part of the lecture. The units of the theory part will be online only. They will be live-streamed and recorded ("virtual lecture hall" via BigBlueButton in Moodle).Second goal (praxis): A fairly frequently expressed wish of many students is to have more practical aspects in the study programme, and more input regarding the actual work in school. These concerns will be met (at least a bit) in this lecture. In three lecture units, an experienced teacher will talk about various aspects of practical teaching and answer questions. The units of the praxis part will take place in the lecture hall (Hörsaal 13). They will additionally be live-streamed and recorded, but it is advisable to attend on site in the lecture hall.
