    Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course provides an introduction to variational methods for parabolic evolution equations, with a primary focus on the concept of gradient flows. The material will cover basic topics alongside selected advanced subjects. In addition to the classical convex theory in Hilbert spaces, students will see blow-up phenomena, long-term behavior, and the Wasserstein framework in metric spaces. Applications to nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs), geometric flows, and, if time permits, data science, will also be discussed.

    Assessment and permitted materials

Students are expected to be familiar with the course material. The exam will be oral and scheduled flexibly. Questions will be drawn from a predefined list of topics.

    Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

In order to get a positive grade, students must be able to reproduce and comment on some selected proofs from the course.

    Examination topics

The exam requires the understanding of the lecture material. A course script will be provided to support students in their preparation.

    Reading list

A course script will be gradually compiled and made available during the course.
