Aims, contents and method of the course

This seminar is conceived for students who have fun solving problems that
require tricky applications of basic mathematical knowledge and a lot of
clever and creative thinking. The proposed exercises stem from many
different areas of mathematics, the correct recognition of the applicable
theoretical tools represents a big part of the interest but also of the difficulty of the problems and distinguishes them from the classical exercises in introductory seminars.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

During the semesters short tlks will present several selected topics that
may be relevant for the solving certain classes of problems. The main
focus of the seminar is of course to train the skill of solving problems
and there is no better way of doing this than treating and solving as many
exercises as possible. Moreover 4 participants will have the chance to
represent the University of Vienna in April 2013 at the Vojtech Jarnik
Competition Competition or in July 2013 at the IMC.

Examination topics

Im Lauf des Semesters sollen ausgesuchte theoretische Schwerpunkte in Form von Kurzvorträgen besprochen werden, die jeweils beim Lösen einer Klasse von Aufgaben hilfreich sind. Der wesentliche Aspekt des Seminars ist natürlich, das selbständige Lösen zu trainiern und dazu gibt es nichts besseres, als so viele Beispiele wie möglich bearbeitet und gelöst zu haben. Darüberhinaus bietet sich für 4 Teilnehmer die Möglichkeit, die Universität Wien entweder beim Vojtech Jarnik Wettbewerb im April 2013 oder beim IMC im Juli 2013 zu vertreten .
