Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Research Seminar: selected topics of current top-level research on groups and related structures, with applications. The themes vary and include geometric, combinatorial, and asymptotic aspects of finite and infinite groups, randomness in graphs and groups, group C*-algebras, low-dimensional topology.
The first hour (15:00–15:45) of every seminar is an introductory lecture explaining basic notions that are going to appear during the second hour (16:00–16:45)— a regular research seminar presenting recent developments.

The seminar is open to students of all degrees: Bachelor, Master or Ph.D.

Assessment and permitted materials

You will receive an individual assignment, adapted to your background, for giving two oral introductory presentations, 45 minutes each. These two will be on distinct recent research topics.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The seminar is open to students of all degrees: Bachelor, Master or Ph.D. You are very welcome to participate. The introductory part is specifically adapted to students with no prior experience in research. The knowledge of basic concepts in algebra is required. Examples are groups, vector spaces, linear transformations, group action.

Examination topics

Active participation in the introductory talks.

Reading list

A specific short list is provided depending on the research topic of your two oral introductory presentations.
