Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The course starts with a summary of basic concepts and techniques in complex algebraic geometry - varieties, morphisms, dimension, smoothness, ...We then quickly pass on to elliptic curves, a classical topic with many ramifications, e.g. to algebraic geometry, group theory, function theory, complex analysis, differential geometry, and number theory. The beauty of the subject lies in the interplay of these fields giving rise to a range of fascinating theorems.Recently, elliptic curves have seen important applications in cryptography and coding theory: we will describe and discuss some of these.

There are many excellent texts on elliptic curves, we recommend in particular the books of Joseph Silverman and Neal Koblitz.
