Aims, contents and method of the course

This course will focus on forcing and large cardinal techniques to address some of the classical questions of set theory and analysis. We will begin with a thorough treatment of the fundamental lemmas of forcing. We then show Easton's Theorem on the powers of regular cardinals and discuss the influence of measurable cardinals on the continuum function. Next we turn to two classical questions related to measure on the reals: (a) Do we need the axiom of choice to prove that there is a nonmeasurable set, and (b) Can we extend Lebesgue measure to all sets of reals if we drop translation invariance? We use large cardinals to find an answer and discuss their necessity. Time permitting, we then discuss the tree property.
