Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This seminar is conceived for students who have fun solving problems that require tricky applications of basic mathematical knowledge and a lot of clever and creative thinking. The proposed exercises stem from many different areas of mathematics, the correct recognition of the applicable theoretical tools represents a big part of the interest but also of the difficulty of the problems and distinguishes them from the classical exercises in introductory seminars.
Assessment and permitted materials
Course assessment (English) Presentation of solutions to selected problems
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
During the semesters short talks will present several selected topics that may be relevant for the solving certain classes of problems. The main focus of the seminar is of course to train the skill of solving problems and there is no better way of doing this than treating and solving as many exercises as possible. Moreover 4 participants will have the chance to represent the University of Vienna in April 2016 at the Vojtech Jarnik Competition Competition.
