Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Teaching mathematics means teaching girls and boys. Therefore it is necessary to bear "gender" in mind. Statistical data show that compared to girls/women boys/men are disproportionally represented in the domains of mathematics, engineering and natural science. In this training course we want to raise the question why this is so and what a teacher can do to make mathematics interesting for girls as well as boys.

The topics of our course are manifold. We deal with

- the meaning of gender, gender mainstreaming, doing gender

- famous fe/male mathematicians, the history of the womens’ education

- academic and extracurricular socialisation

- statistical data (which type of school, teaching profession or university girls/boys choose, ...)

- interaction between teacher and girls/boys

- differences between girls and boys as to interests, achievement, self-confidence

- studies like PISA and TIMS in view of gender aspect

- highly gifted girls and boys

- girls/boys and computer

- educational material with regard to the gender aspect

- study-experiences and imagination of the future from female and male students of mathematics

- ideas for a gender-equitable mathematics-course

Learning processes that are meant to be put into practice should not be restricted to a cognitive area, but incorporate emotional layers and practical applications. This course is therefore designed in a way that all of these three levels are constantly addressed.
