Aims, contents and method of the course
Teaching mathematics means teaching girls and boys. Therefore it is necessary to bear "gender" in mind. Statistical data show that compared to girls/women boys/men are disproportionally represented in the domains of mathematics, engineering and natural science. In this training course we want to raise the question why this is so and what a teacher can do to make mathematics interesting for girls as well as boys. The topics of our course are manifold. We deal with- the meaning of gender, gender mainstreaming, doing gender- famous fe/male mathematicians, the history of the womens education- academic and extracurricular socialisation- statistical data (which type of school, teaching profession or university girls/boys choose, ...)- interaction between teacher and girls/boys- differences between girls and boys as to interests, achievement, self-confidence- studies like PISA and TIMS in view of gender aspect- highly gifted girls and boys- girls/boys and computer- educational material with regard to the gender aspect- study-experiences and imagination of the future from female and male students of mathematics- ideas for a gender-equitable mathematics-courseLearning processes that are meant to be put into practice should not be restricted to a cognitive area, but incorporate emotional layers and practical applications. This course is therefore designed in a way that all of these three levels are constantly addressed.
