Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course is meant to provide a panoramic view on various topics from analysis, especially functional analysis and harmonic analysis, which are of high relevance to application areas, such as signal processing, data compression, medical imaging (e.g. tomography), optics
etc.. The concrete choice of topics will be done in agreement with the interests and needs of the students attending this course.

Assessment and permitted materials

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The participating students should be given the chance to
encounter a variety of application areas where methods from analysis play an important role, in particular for the modelling of natural phenomena and systems, and where typically functional analytic and approximation theoretic tools help to obtain an approximation by a finite-dimensional and computable model that can be treated on a computer (using mathematical software)

Examination topics

The course requires a solid background in linear
algebra and (functional) analysis. It will provide basic techniques and their use in applied analysis (definitely not restricted to the treatment of
partial differential operators)
