Aims, contents and method of the course

This lecture deals with the development of the number concept and the various number sets occuring in school mathematics. Main topics: counting, colloquial language and mathematical operations, natural numbers, rationals, negative numbers, irrational numbers, complex numbers. Each topic is divided into three parts: 1) Didactical background considerations and theories (with
historical comments), 2) reports on empirical investigations, 3) proposals for instruction.
