Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The following topics will be addressed in the framework of classical thermodynamics: phase diagrams, classification of phase transitions, diffusion, nucleation, coarsening, spinodal decomposition, martensitic phase transitions.

Assessment and permitted materials

Oral exam, date as convenient

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

A fundamental insight into mechanisms of phase equilibria and phase transformations in solids shall be conveyed. The aim is to get acquainted with important thermodynamical concepts and their application to micro-strucutral evolution in crystals, creating thereby a sound basis for understanding the behavior of materials.

Examination topics

Lecture series with the possibility of discussions, based on lecture notes which are handed out as hard copy.
