Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Dislocations are linear crystal lattice defects enabling the plastic deformation of solids, especially metallic materials. This course deals with their properties, interactions and their role in the buildup of microstructures in materials. We systematically proceeed from simple to more complex models. Our topics encompass theory of elasticity, internal elastic strains and stress fields, behaviour of dislocations under stress and with the help of thermal fluctuations, self-organized evolution of microstructures, and the repercussions on macroscopic plastic behaviour. Oral exam.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

In the light of the physics of materials, to get a grasp on dislocations, as regards their structure, their interactions and the important role they play in the deformation behaviour of materials.

Examination topics

Lecture on the blackboard, suported by projected material.
