Aims, contents and method of the course

Electronic properties of solids: free electron gas, band model, density of states, effective mass, Fermi surfaces, plasmons, quantum oscillations, dielectric and ferroelectric properties of solids, semiconductors, superconductors, magnetism: Hund's rules, Stoner model, para-, dia- and ferromagnetism, machanical properties of solids, in particular biomaterials, structure of non-crystalline solids and hybrid materials.
Modern experimental methods of structure analysis and for the measurement of electrical and quantum transport phenomena, small-angle X-ray scattering, introduction to highly topical research areas in solid state physics.

Assessment and permitted materials

Oral exam

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Basic knowledge of solid state physics with archetypical examples of the actual research. The lecture aims to give a solid basis for solid state and material physics which are needed for a bachelor or master thesis in solid state/materials physics.

Examination topics

Contents of the lecture. Handouts will be distributed via the eLearning system and serve as a summary of the subject matter of the examination.
