Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The aim of the course is to obtain an understanding of the quantum properties of light. The course will provide an introduction into the experimental foundations of quantum optics, the key experiments and the basic theoretical principles. Topics include: review of linear and nonlinear optics; lasers and cavities; photon statistics; nonclassical states of light; cavity quantum electrodynamics (cavity QED); quantum optical control of matter (trapped ions, quantum optomechanics); measuring time and space with quantum light (frequency combs, atomic clocks, gravitational wave detectors)

Assessment and permitted materials

Before each class, participants have to prepare a set of exercises, which can be found on the moodle of the University of Vienna. Participants can be selected to present an exercise they prepared, or to answer questions related to the exercise. The evaluation is through three written mini-tests, based on the exercises proposed during the course, which will take place during the exercise class

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Attendance is compulsory. In order to receive a positive grade, the course may not be missed on more than two occasions, except for serious reasons and with written justification, and at least 50% of possible points in the mini-tests have been acquired.
