Aims, contents and method of the course
Starting from basic knowledge of linear elasticity theory, which the audience should have acquired in more elementary lectures, this lecture provides an overwiew of modern nonlinear continuum physics. The presented topics comprise: abstract body manifold and differential geometric methods, kinematics of large deformations, integrability and compatibility conditions, Beltrami-Mitchell equations, material response functional, classification of materials by their isotropy groups, exemplary solution methods in elasticity and plasticity. Comprehensive knowledge in differential geometry and group theory is not required. The mathematical methods will be introduced and discussed, starting from physical problems.
