Aims, contents and method of the course

The goal is to provide a good overview and understanding of the rapidly evolving field of quantum thermodynamics. From the mathematical foundations of the celebrated second law to the design of useful machines comprised only of a few quantum systems.
The course will introduce the relevant concepts from thermodynamics, quantum optics, quantum information required to understand some of the central results and key experiments in the field. It will start with a crash-course on quantum physics, followed by an in depth introduction to the theory of thermodynamics and ends with a discussion of contemporary experiments in the field.

Assessment and permitted materials

Oral exam with both lecturers at the end of the semester.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Succesful exam, both on the theory and experimental aspects of the lecture.

Examination topics

Gibbs ensembles, resource theories, thermodynamic laws and implementations of quantum machines. Will be provided in greater detail during the lectures.
