Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The students learn about the numerical algorithms of statistical mechanics and apply them to solve physical problems on the computer. In particular, participants will use molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo simulations to study systems of interest in statistical mechanics (spin systems, liquids, polymers, etc.)

Students will be assigned to one of the lecturers and work on a project under her/his supervision. The topic of the project is chosen in accordance with the supervisor. Students meet regularly (in person or online) with their supervisor to discuss progress and further work.

A written report of about 15-20 pages on the project has to be turned in at the end of the semester. Towards the end of the semester, each participant will present the results of their work to the other participants and the supervisors.

Participants will work on their own computers.

Physical participation in the kick-off meeting (Vorbesprechung) is required.

Prerequisites: basic programming skills, knowledge of statistical physics and condensed matter physics.

Assessment and permitted materials

The assessment will be done based on the progress in the project and on the final report.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Minimum requirement: Active participation in the regular progress meetings arranged with the supervisor and submission of a final report of sufficient quality and extent.

Assessment criteria: Progress of project, quality of final report.
