Photorefractive materials are media which change their refractive index under illumination with light. This monlinear optical phenomenon is discussed for electrooptic crystals. Starting from Maxwell's equations, the electrooptic effect and light induced charge-transport mechanisms, the course deals with generating and characterising volume phase-gratings in dooped electrooptic materials. Those media are nowadays used for holographic data-storage, in waveguides and other evices such as optical limitrs or phase-conjugate mirrors. Finally, the topic is generalized in the sense that holographically produced gratings are used for neutron-optics, in particular neutron interferometry.
Basic knowledge in solid state physics required.
