Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Students will acquire an in-depth knowledge of the concepts, models and methods of modern electronic structure theory. The students will be provided with the necessary skills and problem-solving tools
to address and solve subject-specific problems in condensed-matter physics.

Modern electronic structure methods for solids and molecules (linear combination of plane wave and atomic orbitals); lattice vibrations and phonons; Density Functional Theory, Hartree-Fock method and configuration interactions; many-body perturbation theory, second quantization, introduction to Quantum Field Theory, Feynman diagrammatic methods.

Assessment and permitted materials

Written exam. Duration about 3 hours. Four calculation examples, which are similar to the exercises, have to be worked out. The elaboration of an example is usually between one and three pages. It is strongly recommended to complete the exercises, as this contributes significantly to the deepening of the learned material and thus makes mastering of the exam examples much easier.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

At the exam, at least 50% of the possible points need to be obtained for a positive grade.

Examination topics

Exam topics include all topics covered in the lecture and exercise. In the exam, mostly examples are to be calculated that are similar to the exercise examples. Selected sections from the lecture material could also be tested (derivations of equations).
