Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The term “In situ” is a Latin phrase that translates to “on-site” or “in the original place”. In the context of electron microscopy, in situ techniques refer to observing a sample’s response to a stimulus in real time to study the structure-property relations of the materials. In addition to in situ microscopy, the course will also introduce advanced imaging techniques such as Lorentz microscopy and different 4D-STEM techniques, where a full diffraction pattern is recorded for each sample location. These topics will be introduced in the context of (scanning) transmission electron microscopy with a focus on practical aspects and methods available currently at the faculty.

The course will be carried out through lectures, exercises and seminars. Roughly, the first third of the course is an interval of lectures, second third of the course is reserved for practical exercises, and the last third is dedicated to student seminars, which will cover in-depth discussions of the state-of-the-art microscopic techniques based on current literature selected by the students.

Assessment and permitted materials

One third (1/3) of the grade will come from the seminar and two thirds (1/3 + 1/3) will come from exercise participation and reports (each student participates in two experiments).
The exercise grade consists of the protocol (1/2), participation (1/4) and exercise presentation (1/4).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Both the seminar and each of the lab exercises need to be passed separately to get a positive grade
