Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course gives an introduction to the basic concepts of neutron optics. Starting with the equation of motion for light, we derive analogies for slow neutrons Next we discuss the major optical phenomena of diffraction or reflection. An important issue of the course will be the generation of thick holographic gratings for cold neutrons via the photo-neutronrefractive effect and related materials. Coherence properties of matter waves, dynamical diffraction theory (for light and neutrons) , the basics of neutron interferometry as well as the discussion of groundbreaking experiments and their interpretation conclude the course.

Assessment and permitted materials
