The exact course dates and times will be adjusted in the preliminary meeting to allow for simultaneous attendance of the bachelor seminar.
The preliminary meeting will take place on 10.03.2023 at 13:30 in the Victor-Franz-Hess Lecture room.

The lab itself will take place on the days listed for roughly 6 hours in the lab facilities of Isotope Physics, Währinger Straße 17, 1090 Vienna. The above time includes a variable lunch break.
Other commitments such as practice tests etc. can be generally accommodated after consultation. According to the current Covid regulations, the sessions will be held on-site, but depending on the situation, individual sessions may also be held via online teaching. For current information on Covid regulations, please refer to the information pages of the University of Vienna; the regulations relevant to this course (masking requirement, access rule, etc.) can be found in the associated Moodle course starting in March. If you need access, please contact the course instructor.

Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

An introduction to the physics and measurements techniques in radioactivity and nuclear physics will be given in this experimental course. The measurements must be evaluated, interpreted and presented as lab reports. After a short discussion at the beginning of each course day, the students will work independently in small groups on their experiments. A supervisor is available for questions during the experiments or later during evaluation and writing of the lab report.

Assessment and permitted materials

Active participation, written reports, 5-minute micro test with multiple-choice questions at the beginning of each course unit about the unit content described in the instructions. A list of all questions will be provided with each unit. No aids are allowed in the microtest.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

In order to get a positive grade , 5 lab reports have to be handed in (allocation of lab report writing takes place in the lab course). Each protocol is graded individually, the average over all microtests counts as another protocol. 50% of the performance (5 protocols+mean of all microtests) must be positive, above that the grading scale is linear. Your presence in the exercise classes is expected and obligatory. You are allowed to skip one session without reason. Further missed sessions will lead to a negative grade (fail) unless there is a credible and reasonable excuse.

Examination topics

Areas of nuclear physics, which are relevant for the experimental course according to the instruction sheets as well as additional material made available via Moodle. The instruction sheets are uploaded to Moodle 1 week ahead of the course.

Reading list

The instructions for each exercise on Moodle and the literature quoted therein.
