Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The aim is to deal with relevant research topics on aerosol physics, with a special focus on aerosol dynamics and optics. The students will learn to read scientific literature and give scientific presentations.

In this course students learn...
- to read and understand scientific literature
- about current research topics in aerosol physics
- to give scientific presentations
- to participate in a discussion and ask questions
- to give constructive feedback to others

Method: Presentation and discussion of current literature or current master and doctoral theses.

Note: It is recommended to choose this course only if the lecture 260010 VO "Aerosol Physics - Physics of Disperse Systems" or the module WPF 9 "Aerosol Physics" in the Bachelor Degree Physics at the University of Vienna has been completed.

Assessment and permitted materials

Continuous assessment course.
Presentation of a topic previously agreed on with the teachers (current literature or master's or doctoral thesis). The student must also actively participate in the discussion of the presented topic.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Minimum requirements
- Compulsory attendance, unexcused absence is allowed twice
- Presentation is mandatory.

Assessment criteria:
- Presentation, 50% of the total points
- Participation in discussions, 50% of the total points
- Attendance is mandatory; unexcused absence is allowed twice
- Constructive, technically correct contributions and engagement in the discussions of the presentations
- A short, written feedback ("Notizzettel") of the chosen literature as preparation for an upcoming presentation

In order to attain a positive grade at least 50.00% of the total points must be achieved.
The grading key for assessment is:
Very good: 100.00% - 87.00%
Good: 86.99% - 75.00%
Satisfactory: 74.99% - 63.00%
Sufficient: 62.99% - 50.00%
Not sufficient: 49,99% - 0,00%

Examination topics

All contents covered in the course, in particular the technical content of the lecture given by the specific student and those presented in the seminar.

Reading list

Relevant scientific publications will be announced in the preliminary meeting (first date) or on Moodle. General background information to many topics covered throughout the course can be found in:

Hinds, William C. Aerosol Technology: Properties, Behaviour, and Measurement of Airborne Particles. Second ed. New York: John Wiley & Sons, Ins., 1999. (als eBook verfügbar: https://ubdata.univie.ac.at/AC15005893)
