Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The aim of this course is to make students familiar with exercises selected to cover the learning objectives of the main course "Thermodynamics and Statistical Physics". The course is based on students' active participation. Students need to solve the exercises independently and upload their answers on Moodle weekly. Students present their solutions during the class.

Assessment and permitted materials

This is a course with continuous assessment.

Each week, an exercises sheet will be provided, and students are expected to independently complete the assigned tasks. Answers must be uploaded in a single document on the course's Moodle page by 14:00 on the day of the class at the latest. Students can indicate the number of solved exercises answered and uploaded.

During the class, students present their answers on the blackboard. The rest of the class can ask questions, participate in discussion about correctness, alternative approaches, etc. Consistent attendance is also required to pass the course, with no more than two unexcused absences.

Finally, a test at the end of the semester concludes the assessment.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The course is graded based on three factors:

-Uploaded answers to the worked tasks from the weekly exercises sheets (10 points),
-Effective communication and presentation of exercises on the blackboard (5 points), and
-Results of a written test at the end of the semester (5 points),

If fewer than 60% of the exercises are uploaded, the course is considered failed. Otherwise, points are awarded as follows:

60-68% uploaded: 1 point
69-76% uploaded: 2 points
77-84% uploaded: 3 points
85-92% uploaded: 4 points
93-100% uploaded: 5 points

Presenting a task during class can earn between 0 and 5 points, depending on the clarity of presentation methodology and the explanation of steps followed. More than one student can present the same exercise if a different approach has been used and time allows.

A written test towards the end of the course can bring 0-5 points. The course is considered failed if less than 2.5 points are collected.

The overall grade is determined using the following scale:

0-9 points: 5 ("Unsatisfactory")
10-11 points: 4 ("Sufficient")
12-14 points: 3 ("Satisfactory")
15-17 points: 2 ("Good")
18-20 points: 1 ("Excellent")

Examination topics

Exercises on the topics covered in the exercises sheets and the theoretical lectures.

Reading list

Exercises sheets, notes of the main course and books mentioned in main course's Moodle page. When needed, extra notes will be provided.
