Introduction into Vacuum Physics with Practical Applications

4.50 ECTS (3.00 SWS), SPL 26 - Physik

Mi+Do 10:00-11:00, Kleiner Hörsaal d. Inst. f. Materialphysik
Beginn: 5.10.2006
Vakuumphysikal. Grundbegriffe, Vakuum-Erzeugung (Mechan. Pumpen, Dampfstrahl-, Turbomolekular-, Ionengetter-Pumpen), Vakuum-Messung, Lecksuche, vor Ort Besprechung u. Demonstration von Vakuumanlagen im Inst. f. Materialphysik, z.B. Einkristallofen, Aufdampfanlage u. Elektronenmikroskopie.
Ziel: Vakuum ist die Voraussetzung f. viele physikal. Experimente (v. der Material- bis zur Hochenergie-Physik); Vakuum ist f. Dinge unseres praktischen Lebens notwendig (z.B. Lebensmittel, TV). Das dazu notwendige physikal. Verständnis bietet die Vorlesung.

Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Methods of making vacuum (mechanical vacuum pumps, diffusion pumps, turbo molecular pump, ion getter pump), of measuring vacuum, of leak detection; demonstrations of various vacuum systems used in the Institute of Materials Physics (e.g. single crystal furnace, evaporation apparatus, electron microscopes).

Assessment and permitted materials

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Vacuum has to be used in many fields of physics (from materials physics to high energy physics); vacuum is necessary for many things used in daily life (processed food, thin films, TV). It is the aim of this lecture to provide the necessary background in physics.
