Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The topics of the corresponding lecture "Scientific Computing" are applied in exercises. The exercises consist of creating computer programs for the numerical solution of problems in the fields of numerical mathematics (systems of linear equations, error and convergence analysis, regression analysis, solution of nonlinear equations, linear eigenvalue problems, interpolation, numerical differentiation, numerical integration, ordinary differential equations, partial differential equations).

The programming environment is Python.

There are a total of 13 sessions. You can find more detailed information on the individual dates on Moodle. Students are asked to familiarize themselves with the Python tutorial before the first class (March 10), and must already have Python installed on their own laptop. This laptop is required for all exercise classes!

UNEXCUSED ABSENCE from the FIRST SESSION (March 10) will lead to immediate and automatic deregistration!

The course is organized as follows (detailed dates in Moodle):
- In the first class students revise the basics of Python.
- The second class, and every second class after that, will be a hands-on session where students work on the assigned exercises and can ask questions to teaching assistant and tutor.
- The third class, and every second class after that, will be an assessment class (see below).

Assessment and permitted materials

The programs must be uploaded via Moodle before the lesson every second week. The programs will be evaluated and count max. 2 points each. As part of the practice sessions, an oral survey is carried out on the programs submitted.

The PUE is an exam-related course and serves as preparation for the module exam. Registration for PUE is not mandatory, but is recommended.
Please note: with the registration for PUE the participation is binding. Cancellation of this course is possible until Tuesday 31.03.2020 23:59.
Without exception, all students registered after this deadline can participate in the PUE and will be graded according to the evaluation criteria of the PUE.

The grade of the PUE is NOT included in the grade of the module examination. The proof of achievement required for the module (VO + PUE) is provided by passing the module examination.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Consolidation and deeper understanding of the content of the associated lecture. Independent programming in Python.

Attendance of at least 11 classes is mandatory. In order to successfully complete the course, at least half of the issued exercises need to be positively evaluated AND half of the total points need be obtained.

Examination topics

Programming and presentation of the exercises in an alternating mode. A tutor is available in every second exercise class (hands-on sessions) to assist work on the tasks.

Reading list

Lecture notes "Scientific Computing" and "Python Tutorial" accessible via Moodle.
