Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The topics of the corresponding lecture "Scientific Computing" are applied in exercises. The exercises consist of creating computer programs for the numerical solution of problems in the fields of numerical mathematics (systems of linear equations, error and convergence analysis, regression analysis, solution of nonlinear equations, linear eigenvalue problems, interpolation, numerical differentiation, numerical integration, ordinary differential equations, partial differential equations).

The programming environment is Python. Students are asked to have Python installed on their laptops before the first class (March 18), and to have basic knowledge of Python coding.

UNEXCUSED ABSENCE from the FIRST SESSION (March 18) will lead to immediate and automatic deregistration!

There are a total of 13 sessions organized as follows (more details in Moodle):
- In the first class students revise the basics of Python.
- The second class, and every second class after that, will be a hands-on session where students work on the assigned exercises and can ask questions to the teacher.
- The third class, and every second class after that, will be a presentation class where the programs are explained and discussed.

Assessment and permitted materials

The students are asked to upload their programs via Moodle before the presentation class every second week. These programs will be evaluated. During the presentation classes, students can present and discuss their programs and earn additional points.

The PUE is an exam-related course and serves to prepare for the module examination. Registration for the PUE is not mandatory, but is recommended. Please note: participation is binding when you register for the PUE.
It is possible to deregister from this course without consequences until March 25, 2022 23:59.
Without exception, all students registered after this deadline can take part in the PUE and are graded according to the PUE assessment criteria.
The grade of the PUE does NOT count towards the grade of the module examination.
The proof of performance required for the module (VO + PUE) is provided by completing the module examination.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Consolidation and deeper understanding of the content of the associated lecture. Independent programming in Python.

In order to successfully complete the course, at least 50% of the total points need to be obtained.

Examination topics

According to the VO course; programming skills (in Python) for scientific computing.

Reading list

Lecture notes "Scientific Computing" and "Python Tutorial" accessible via Moodle.
