Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The topics discussed in the main lecture "Scientific Computing" are applied via exercises and hands-on sessions.
The goal of the course is to learn to write computer codes for the numerical solution of problems in the field of numerical mathematics.
Topics to be discussed are, among the others:
- systems of linear equations
- error and convergence analysis
- regression analysis
- solution of nonlinear equations
- linear eigenvalue problems
- interpolation
- numerical differentiation
- numerical integration
- ordinary and partial differential equations

The chosen programming environment is Python.
Students are supposed to have Python 3 installed on their laptops before the first class (March, 10th), and to have at least a basic knowledge about Python coding.

Please try to be present for the first lecture (March, 10th) as details about logistic, organization and other important matters will be discussed.
If, for any reason, you cannot be in class but you still want to attend the course, please communicate your absence by email.

There are a total of 13 sessions organized as follows (more details in Moodle):
- The first class will be used to discuss and recall the basics of Python.
- The second class, and every second class after that, will be a hands-on session where students are supposed to work on the assigned exercises and can ask questions to the teacher and the tutor.
- In the third class, and in every second class after that, a presentation will be held by selected students (volunteers are highly encouraged) where programs are explained and discussed.
- Note that the session of March, 31st is cancelled.

Assessment and permitted materials

Students are asked to upload their programs via Moodle before the presentation class every second week.
The updated programs will be evaluated.
During the presentation classes, students can present and discuss their programs to earn additional points.

This PUE is a good opportunity for students to put in practice concepts from the main lecture.
Nonetheless, the grade from the PUE is not taken into account for the final exam of the main lecture.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

For the course to be passed at least one presentation is required by every student and the upload of half of the assigned problems.
Presentations can be performed alone or in group of (maximum) two.
In addition, 50% of the total points of the course are necessary to pass the PUE.
Points are obtained via the uploaded exercises and via the presentations in class.
Also note that active participation during the course is evaluated in grading the PUE.

Examination topics

Refer to the main course and to the content of the exercises.

Reading list

Refer to the main course.
Additional resources will be available on Moodle.
