UPDATE: Due to the COVID-19 situation, all seminars will be held online until the end of the SoSe20 semester. You will be obtaining a Zoom link one day before each seminar. In the case of any further questions please send an e-mail (andrii.chumak@univie.ac.at).

UPDATE: Due to the university closure during the COVID-19 pandemic, the seminars will be performed online. All general materials like the list of topics, dates, general information on the presentation of scientific results, etc. are uploaded to the Moodle platform. The list of literature needed for the preparation of the presentations will be sent individually per mail. The seminars will be given by the students online using Zoom software and will be followed by the joint online discussion. The email with detailed information will be sent to all the students in advance. In order to get support with the preparation of the presentations or in the case of any further questions please send an e-mail (andrii.chumak@univie.ac.at).

Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The seminar has two objectives:

1) Students will learn how to present scientific results. During the first seminar (13.03.2020), I will give a soft-skill training on the preparation of slides and on their presentation. Afterwards, every student will make one presentation during the semester. Each presentation will be analysed all together to underline the positive and negative sides. The topic can be related to Bachelor/Master/PhD studies or will be selected by the student from the specially prepared list of topics.

2) Students will learn about modern trends in the fields of magnetism and superconductivity. Thus, the student presentations will be mixed with the scientific talks given by the members of the group of Nanomagnetism and Magnonic as well as by external people.

The current list of external guests and talks is:

03.04.20, Prof. Dr. S.I. Bondarenko (ILTPE, Kharkiv), Probing energy gap and relaxation time in superconductors by quantum interferometry
15.05.20, Dr. Roberto Troncoso (NTNU, Trondheim), Antiferromagnetic Spin-Waves: from magnonics to hydrodynamics
22.05.20, Dr. Vitaliy Vasyuchka (TU Kaiserslautern), Magnon spin transport in the presence of magnetoelastic interaction
19.06.20, Dr. Amalio Fernández-Pacheco (University of Glasgow), New twists in chiral magnetism: Geometrical effects and interlayer mediation

Assessment and permitted materials

Presentation of own scientific results or current research papers. Active participation in the scientific discussions after the presentations.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Active participation in >80% of all meetings. In some special cases, missed seminars can be replaced by the preparation of mini-presentations.

Examination topics

Selected research papers.

Reading list

Will be discussed in the first course, the list of interesting modern topics will be proposed.
