Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Elementary particle physics aims at the understanding of the smallest known buildings blocks of matter (quarks, leptons, Higgs) and the known fundamental kinds of interactions (electro-magnetic, weak, strong, but not gravitation). Indeed, essentially all known phenomena, in particular for the experiments at the Large-Hadron-Collider, can be deduced from the knowledge in elementary particle physics. The lecture provides an introduction in the main concepts.

Note that the content of this lecture is going to be modified and somewhat shortened compared to the previous years.

Aims:
- Basic topics in elementary particle physics
- Building blocks of the Standard Model: electromagnetic, strong and weak interactions
- Relativistic quantum mechanics and basic field theory elements
- Basic calculational tools

Assessment and permitted materials

Course with non-continuous assessment;
The VO serves as preparation for the module examination.
The proof of performance required for the entire module (VO + PUE, 7 ECTS) is provided by completing the written module examination. Exam modalities will be announced later.
