Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

As opposed to other field theories, there is no covariant expression for the energy density in general relativity. This makes the question of definition of the energy interesting and non-trivial. In this seminar we will study the total energy of a gravitating system under various conditions. We will review proofs of positivity of the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner energy, including the spinorial proof by Witten.

Assessment and permitted materials

The course has immanent examination character.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Becoming acquainted with special topics in gravitational physics.

Examination topics

Participants give seminar talks.
