Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Discussion on current research in modern alloy physics including low-dimensional systems (thin films, nanowires, nanoclusters). In the focus are phase transitions, especially order-disorder transformations (long-range ordering, short-range ordering) as well as ordering kinetics, model calculations and simulations of order transformations.
Assessment and permitted materials
Work in class and talk
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Introduction to current research activities in the field of alloy physics, especially in the area of atomic (chemical) ordering (short- and long-range order). In the focus are especially order-disorder transformations and the mechanisms of atom jumps as a basis of all structural changes. A limited part of the field is studied and prepared more or less independently by the student and thereby allows a deep penetration into of the problems of this research area. Preparation and presentation of a short scientific talk gives experience in arranging and presenting the accumulated material. Taking part in the presentations of the other participants extends and broadens the knowledge in theoretical and experimental respect.
Examination topics
Introduction into some important publications and connection to the current view (experimental and theoretical methods, future development), discussion of the results of the literature study, preparation of a written and oral presentation, presentation of the work in a seminar lecture. participation in other lectures and in the discussion. Presentations are preferred in English.
