The lectures are intended to give an introduction to the theory of phase transitions in condensed matter systems and provide a solid basis for the understanding of the renormalization group theory of second order phase transitions (whose presentation is planned as a follow-up).Contents:
" Short repetition of the elementary statistical mechanics of phase transitions: ensembles, fluctuations, classification of phase transitions, critical exponents
" Thermodynamics of classical fluids and Ornstein-Zernicke theory
" Thermodynamic limit and Yang-Lee-theorems
" Generalized lattice spin models: Ising models lattice gas, transfer matrix
" mean field theory, Landau theoryRequired knowledge: Basic knowledge of thermodynamics and statistical mechanics; some quantum mechanics and quantum field theory might be helpful
