Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Within the scope of the Sparkling Science Project "SOLARbrunn: Mit der Sonne in die Zukunft!" students of the technical college of engineering in Hollabrunn work together with researchers trying to develop a concept for analyzing and optimizing the sustainable use of energy within a municipal building. Relying on this experience material for inquiry based learning in physics education will be developed.

Assessment and permitted materials

Course with immanent character
portfolio

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Students will
- develop units for inquiry-based learning concerning the sustainable use of energy, especially solar energy, within the municipality of Hollabrunn, especially for a selected building, and actively cooperate in the research project (together with students and teachers of the local technical college of engineering as well as researchers at the Faculty of Physics, University of Vienna)
- gain realistic insight into the nature of science (NOS) and scientific practice within science and social sciences.
- develop teaching materials for inquiry-based learning, relying on their own experiences within this research project.

Examination topics

Students cooperating within the project of SOLARbrunn are supported by teachers and researchers at the Faculty of Physics. The following aspects are addressed in the course:
- Basic knowledge about sustainability, comfort in buildings, photovoltaics, green buildings;
- field trip(s) in order to get to know good practice (green buildings)
- contact to researchers and school environments
- developing a designs for inquiry-based learning processes, reflecting the own work and evaluation

Reading list

will be announced during the course
