Aims, contents and method of the course
The focal-series reconstruction technique represents a numerical inversion of the imaging process in high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The fundamentals of high-resolution imaging are explained first (forward way from the electron wave function to the image). Based on the forward way, the inversion process from the image back to the electron wave function is derived. State-of-the-art numerical techniques for the measurement and for the elimination of residual lens aberrations from the reconstructed wave function are additionally treated. The explanation of these numerical techniques is accompanied by application examples from the field of materials science.
