Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Basic properties of solids:
a) Structure of solids (binding, crystal systems, diffraction), Lattice vibrations (molecular vibrations, phonons and pnonon spectroscopy), Electronic properties of materials (band model, density of states, effective mass and photon emission spectroscopy), Electron excitation (metall-isolator, semiconductors), Transport properties (heat transport, superconductivity and diffusion), Magnetism (Hund's Rules, Stoner model, para-, dia- and ferromagnetism).
b) Intoduction to modern experimental methods with special emphasis on current research results.

Assessment and permitted materials

Oral examination

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Basic knowledge of solid state physics with archetypical examples of the actual research. The lecture aims to give a solid basis for solid state and material physics which are needed for a bachelor or master in solid state /materials physics.

In addition 2 h exercises are offered

Examination topics

Lecture with preferred use of the blackboard. In addition presentations of graphics via beamer.
