Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Most emphasis will be given to the so called "new media"(films, videos, video clips, virtual interactive experiments and simulations). Based on an introduction to communication theories the different types of media available will be presented. Advantages and opportunities as well as the problems of each application will be discussed. The criteria for the analysis and valuation of multimedia products currently offered for physics teaching will be investigated in case studies and their practical use demonstrated by preparing concrete teaching units. The internet research of appropriate sources by teachers themselves and the suggestions for a useful research on behalf of the pupils complete the program.
This year special attention will take out the modern communication tools. The didactical potentials of e-learning elements in the development of teaching and learning strategies will be discussed and immediately applied in the course. The CMS "Moodle" will be presented and its cooperative teaching and learning methods as well as the communicative advantages of the tool will be demonstrated.

Assessment and permitted materials

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Understanding of the course. Media are considered a basic didactic approach in all subjects by the Austrian laws for education (bmbwk: GZ 33.223/14-VI 13b/94). A multimedia designed teaching not only respects the legal situation but also offers multiple didactic and practical advantages which support modern and up to date teaching. The participants of the multimedia class will be offered the opportunity to acquaint themselves with different types of multimedia supported teaching. The knowledge gained from this information will enable them to successfully multimedia in physics teaching.

Examination topics

Corresponding to the type of the course. The introduction to the didactics of media based teaching and the presentation of the currently available media for physics teaching constitute the information oriented part of the lecture. The analysis of given examples following precise criteria will be the task for the teamwork and the results of the teams will be documented. Based on those findings all the participants will prepare their own multimedia teaching units and will present and discuss them in class. All students have to prepare at least one unit. Sequences of more units which refer to related subjects can be prepared also by groups of two or three students. The research of the material has to be done by the students themselves. The resulting collection represents for the participants a pool of multimedia units for their future activity as physics teachers.

The course provides a model of blended learning. Contemporaneously to regular attendance in class, participation in the e-learning course elements is required. Based on the structures of "Moodle" and "PHP-groupware", contents will be created and discussed. In this way the use of electronic information, communication and collaboration will be transferred and taught on the meta-level.

Evaluation and grading are based on the participation in the teamwork, the logs and the participation in the discussion as well as the preparation and the presentation of the teaching units. Therefore participants must commit to regular attendance of the classes. Students may not be absent more than twice.
