Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

How does Physics work? Experiment and theory, scientific results, measuring and unit systems, modelling and mathematics, physics formulae. Characteristics of physics research and academic activities. Carrying out simple experiments by small groups of participants. Examples of physics knowledge.Discussion of results and more general implications for physical methodology and limitations of its application. Further topics: reductionism and emergence.

Assessment and permitted materials

For students registered in the EC "Scentific thinking: Case studies, foundations, influences" Module exam about Module 1.

For all others lecture exam

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

To be able to explain selected basic facts in physics, explain physics methods and generation of knowledge, to be able to give information about scientific research acitivity. To realize and explain the limitations of scientific methods.

Examination topics

Strongly interconnected lectures and practical course, imparting knowledge about crucial facts combined with practical course and discussions.
