Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Aims:
Acquirement (or refreshment) of the basic mathematical skills required in the initial phase of physics studies.

Contents:
The most important functions and their properties, coordinate systems and vector algebra, complex numbers (Cartesian representation, exponential form), differentiation rules, differentiation of functions and vectors, partial differentiation, integration rules, rotational bodies, calculation of arc lengths, multiple integrals, ordinary differential equations 1st and 2nd order (linear homogeneous and inhomogeneous differential equations in the physical context, existence and uniqueness of solutions) as well as differentiation of fields (grad, div and rot), integration of fields (curve and surface integrals).

Method:
In the lecture the concepts and methods are discussed by means of representative examples (knowledge transfer by ex-cathedra teaching) as well as the learned knowledge is directly applied (interactive elements). An active participation is necessary for learning the application of methods to solve problems. The use of the Student Response System srs.univie.ac.at is intended to motivate active participation.

Assessment and permitted materials

Course with non-continuous assessment;
The VO serves as preparation for the STEOP 2 module examination.
The proof of performance required for the entire STEOP 2 module (VO + PUE + PVU, 7 ECTS) is provided by completing the written module examination. A separate registration for the desired exam date via u:find within the registration period is absolutely necessary.

STEOP 2 Written module examination:
Permitted aids: none
Exam dates:
Friday, 19.01.2024, 13:30-16:00
Friday, 02.02.2024, 09:00-11:30
June 2024
September 2024

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

At least 50% of the total points must be achieved to pass the module examination.
The grading key for assessment is:
Grade 1 100.00% - 87.50%
Grade 2 87.49% - 75.00%
Grade 3 74.99% - 62.50%
Grade 4 62.49% - 50.00%
Failed 49.99% - 0.00%

Examination topics

Contents of the courses of the STEOP 2 module (VO+PUE+PVU). These are all chapters of the lecture notes " Einführung in die Physikalischen Rechenmethoden – Wintersemester 2023/24", exept those chapters that are marked with "NICHT Vorlesungs- und Prüfungsstoff". The calculus skills acquired in the exam preparation exercise class as well as in the exam preparation lecture combined with exercise units are inherently tested in the module examination.
