Aims, contents and method of the course

Aims:
Acquirement (or refreshment) of the basic mathematical skills required in the initial phase of physics studies. Independent application of the knowledge acquired in the lecture in mathematical examples and physical problems (solving of mathematical problems, discussion of different solutions), deepening of the lecture material, presentation of results.

Contents:
The most important functions and their properties, coordinate systems and vector algebra, complex numbers (Cartesian representation, exponential form), differentiation rules, differentiation of functions and vectors, partial differentiation, integration rules, rotational bodies, calculation of arc lengths, multiple integrals, ordinary differential equations 1st and 2nd order (linear homogeneous and inhomogeneous differential equations in the physical context, existence and uniqueness of solutions) as well as differentiation of fields (grad, div and rot), integration of fields (curve and surface integrals).

Method:
Students receive a weekly exercise sheet. In the exercises, the students present the solutions to their independently solved exercises on the blackboard.

Assessment and permitted materials

Course with continuous assessment;
The PUE serves as preparation for the STEOP 2 module examination.
Registration for the PUE is not mandatory, but strongly recommended. Registration is possible until Thursday, 04th October 2023 23:59

Note: With the registration for the PUE the participation is mandatory. Cancellation of this course is possible until Friday 20th October 2023 23:59. All students registered after this deadline will be graded according to the assessment criteria of the PUE.

The assessment of the PUE is based on 3 partial performances, which contribute equally to the total score:
1) Participation
2) Performance on the blackboard
3) Percentage of completed exercises

The grade of the PUE is NOT included in the grade of the STEOP 2 module exam.
The proof of performance required for the entire STEOP 2 module (VO + PUE + PVU, 7 ECTS) is provided by completing the module examination.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

For a positive assessment of the PUE, at least 50% of the total points (sum of the weighted maximum number of points of the partial performances) must be achieved.
The grading key for assessment is:
Grade 1 100.00% - 87.50%
Grade 2 87.49% - 75.00%
Grade 3 74.99% - 62.50%
Grade 4 62.49% - 50.00%
Failed 49.99% - 0.00%

Examination topics

According to the parallel lecture "Einführung in die Physikalischen Rechenmethoden" as well as the parallel PVU of the STEOP 2 module; contents and calculus skills, which are imparted in the exercise class.

Course with continuous assessment;
The PUE serves as preparation for the STEOP 2 module examination.
Registration for the PUE is not mandatory, but strongly recommended. Registration is possible until 04.10.2023 23:59.

Note: With the registration for the PUE the participation is mandatory. Cancellation of this course is possible until 20.10.2023 23:59. All students registered after this deadline will be graded according to the assessment criteria of the PUE.

The assessment of the PUE is based on 3 partial performances, which contribute equally to the total score:
1) Attendance
2) Performance on the blackboard
3) Percentage of completed exercises

The grade of the PUE is NOT included in the grade of the STEOP 2 module exam.
The proof of performance required for the entire STEOP 2 module (VO + PUE + PVU, 7 ECTS) is provided by completing the module examination.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

For a positive assessment of the PUE, at least 50% of the total points (sum of the weighted maximum number of points of the partial performances) must be achieved.
The grading key for assessment is:
Grade 1 100.00% - 87.00%
Grade 2 86.99% - 75.00%
Grade 3 74.99% - 63.00%
