Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The course "Theoretical Physics 3 for the Teaching Profession" focuses on the conceptual structure of quantum physics and its predictions, keeping the mathematical-technical level of difficulty low. It provides school-relevant orientation and survey knowledge that will enable prospective teachers to bring enthusiasm and interest in the fundamentals of quantum mechanics into the classroom, explain how it differs from classical physics, address student questions, and demonstrate the validity of the predictions of quantum physics. As part of this course, teachers will be introduced to the ways of working and thinking in physics and to knowledge of the major open questions in modern quantum physics.
Assessment and permitted materials
Written exam (partly multiple-choice, partly calculation examples, no aids allowed)
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
50% of the maximum number of points of the written exam.
Examination topics
Students acquire basic knowledge of conptual foundations and the mathematical formalism of quantum theory and the main quantum phenomena: Quantum state, measurement, preparation, observables, spin, polarization, discrete and continuous quantum theory, Mach-Zehnder interferometer, Schrödinger equation and some solutions (free particle, harmonic oscillator ...), Heisenberg uncertainty relation, mixed states, entanglement Bell's inequalities, no-cloning theorem, quantum teleportation, Hilbert space, matrix calculus, eigenvalues, eigenvectors, elements of probability theory etc.
