Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In this course you will learn in depth about presenting scientific research in the form of a talk and poster, the usual media presented at scientific conferences. Exercises include, writing abstracts (summary of a contribution), analyzing and structuring of content and presenting this in the form of a poster or talk, especially taking into consideration the target audience. Also, you will gain experience in discussing and giving constructive criticism.
In this regard, you will analyze talks, create posters yourself, give talks and regularly give and receive feedback from course participants.
This course contains a theoretical part, in which you will learn the fundamentals of giving good presentations and as the main focus, practical parts, where the aforementioned topics will be put into practice.
Methods:
The course program contains the following graded exercises:
- a short 5 minute presentation
- a poster of your own Bachelor thesis
- a conference contribution consisting of:
o Abstract of max. 150 words (uploaded to moodle)
o Poster
o Long Presentation on the same topic as the poster
This conference contribution will be presented at the end of the course as part of a small Symposium.

Assessment and permitted materials

The overall grade (course grade) is composed of the weighted assessments (grades 1 - 5) of the individual exercises (see above):
- Short presentation of 5 minutes - 10%
- Poster of your own bachelor thesis - 10%
- Abstract - 15%
- Poster - 25%
- Long presentation - 40%
Partial submissions not made on time will be graded negatively.
Graded are:
Poster:
- Outline, clarity of presentation
- Readability of graphics, text, tables
- Guidance of the reader through the poster
Presentation:
- Technical accuracy
- Quality of slides
- Quality of the presentation
- Time management
- Discussion afterwards
Bonus points can be earned through participation (feedback, questions, discussion), which can lead to an improvement of the grade by a maximum of one grade in the case of a basically already positive conclusion.

Auxiliaries:
All programs that are usually used in the context of scientific presentations and for the representation of scientific data can be used. Presentations may of course be practiced beforehand outside of the course; notes in the form of keywords are permitted, but prepared texts as well as their reading aloud in the context of the presentation are not - the talk should be freely spoken.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Attendance is compulsory on all dates according to the course program. Unexcused absence will result in a negative evaluation of the course. In the case of having a valid reason, the absence can be excused upon presentation of a confirmation (e.g. in case of illness, court date, etc.).
The partial performances are graded; the overall grade is calculated as the weighted average of the five partial performances (see above).
The grade calculated from this can, if it is already positive, be improved by a maximum of one grade by collecting bonus points for active participation (see above).

Examination topics

In this course; there is not final examination, the partial performances or homework to be assessed are an abstract, talks and a poster presentation, which are to be prepared as homework. Any required material will be provided within the course.
