Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Objectives:
Students will get to know all steps of the analytical process in a modern, digitally supported, setting, using a concrete example from current research (focusing on inorganic mass spectrometry, ICP-MS).

Content:
As traditional laboratory work is sometimes no longer common, practical, or feasible nowadays, the course will take place partly online and partly in a seminar room. Students will be shown how modern Analytical Chemistry can operate in a digitized world and the possibilities available for it. Upon successful completion of the course, students will be capable of planning, executing, evaluating, and interpreting a simple analysis using an inorganic mass spectrometer (ICP-MS).
Key components of the internship include:
• Planning of an experiment
• Handling of mass spectrometers, optimization of various relevant instrument and method parameters
• Quantitative mass spectrometric analysis of complex samples
• Data evaluation for analyte quantification
• Calculation of various parameters for quality control

Method:
The course comprises theory and practical parts. In the theory units, the necessary knowledge will be conveyed through lectures and demonstrations, supplemented by independent work by the students.
For the practical parts, various modern digital methods will be used, such as videos, simulators, remote control of a mass spectrometer, or augmented reality.
Additionally, students will work independently or in teams, e.g. for literature research or data evaluation.
The course is concluded by student presentations.
Discussions with students are an essential part of the entire lab course.

Assessment and permitted materials

Assessment criteria:
• Active participation, practical work (continuous assessment course)
• In-time submission of investigation results (e.g. literature searches) and calculations
• Final oral presentation

To ensure good scientific practice, the students may be invited to a grade-relevant final discussion, which must be successfully completed.

Permitted aids:
• Practical part: Laptop/Tablet/Smartphone, calculator, periodic table
• Final discussion: Calculator, periodic table

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Minimum requirements:
• Attendance at the first meeting and also at the final meeting is mandatory.
• The attendance in the practical part must be at least 80%.
• Without exception, absence from the course, also from short parts, has to be communicated in advance to the course instructor.
• The results of literature research and data calculations have to be handed in on time.
• The results have to be presented at the final meeting.
• Each partial performance must be completed by the end of the course.

Assessment criteria:
• Active participation
• Quality of the practical work, including responsible handling of samples, instruments, and resources.
• Quality of the data analysis
• Quality of the presentation

Examination topics

The presentations of the theoretical part
• The content of the practical units & of the discussions
• The materials provided or recommended by the instructors

Reading list
