Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Bioinorganic Chemistry is an interdisciplinary research area and deals with all aspects of metals and their biological functions, e.g., oxygen transport, toxicity of metals, photosynthesis, etc. A general introduction in bioinorganic chemistry will be followed by a discussion of the role of metals in the nature and of metals used in medicine and toxicological relevance. In parallel, basics in coordination chemistry will be repeated and examples of the current research will be presented.

Assessment and permitted materials

Continuous assessment

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The lecture shall provide insight into the central role of coordination compounds in nature, and point out the potential for application as drugs. Selected examples will lead the students to the understanding of fascinating processes occurring in bioinorganic chemistry.
