Aims, contents and method of the course

General informations on enzymes, methods of biotransformations, regeneration of cofactors, uses of oxidoreductases: enantioselective reductions and oxidations; oxidation reactions: enzymatic Bayer-Villiger oxidation, insertion of oxygen into C-H bond, dihydroxylation of aromatics; hydrolysis and condensation reactions catalysed by lipases and proteases: kinetic resolution of alcohols and amino acids; formation of C-C bonds: yeast-catalysed acyloin condensation, aldol reaction, synthesis of cyanohydrins; isopenicillin-N synthase: preparation of modified penicillins; underlying reaction mechanisms.
Required background: basic knowledge of organic chemistry and biochemistry.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Understanding of basic reaction mechanisms and importance and application of enzymes for the preparation of optically active compounds.
