Aims, contents and method of the course
[1] Surface Structure of Solids (fcc, hcp, bcc structures, energetics of solid surfaces, relaxation and reconstruction of surfaces, particulate polycrystalline solids, other single crystal surfaces, classification of overlayer structures), [2] Adsorption (introduction to molecular adsorption, surface bonds, adsorption kinetics, potential-energy curves and energetics of adsorption, chemisorption, kinetics). [3] From Solids to Surfaces (lattice and reciprocal lattice, surface thermodynamics and general crystal shape, special laser interventions for self-assembly nanostructures, electronic states, lattice vibrations, Phonons), [4] The electronic structure of surfaces (work function, electronic surface states, measuring the electronic structure of surfaces), [5] Optical properties of surfaces (Polaritons, second harmonic generation) [6] Vibrational properties of surfaces (optical spectroscopy, IRAS, vibrational spectroscopy with STM).
