Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The elements of the s and p blocks (main elements) of the periodic table and their compounds are studied in detail. Topics covered are natural occurrence, physical properties, chemical periodicity, chemical reactivity, industrial preparation methods, applications, and environmental aspects.Emphasis is placed on understanding the reactivity of the different elements and their compounds, in relation to their position in the periodic table (i.e., electron configuration). The didactic material is supported by a great number of daily life and industrial examples, to underline the connection and the importance to the “real-world” (outside academia). The class is under the format of plenary lectures, but time is dedicated for questions & answer sessions. Both PowerPoint slides and black board are used.
Assessment and permitted materials
Written exam.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Although the lecture will be given in German, I do answer questions and requests asked in English as well.
Examination topics
Contents seen in class. Powerpoint slides.
