AFM and STM have proven to be universally applicable methods to study the structure and morphology of surfaces both of inorganic and organic origin down to the atomic level. Furthermore, in AFM the trend shall be discussed in which way pico-force investigation allow to study very weak interactions between surface and substrate based only on hydrophopic phenomena. Additionally, AFM and STM are suitable for structuring surfaces to design novel devices. Finally, spectroscopic measurements can be performed with STM by varying the bias voltage.
