Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Substance particle concept: The tangible phenomena of matter and their interpretation on the particle level (structure of matter, particle model)

Structure property concept: nature, distribution and interaction of particles determine the properties of a substance (atomic models, the periodic table, chemical bonding, properties of ionic compounds and molecules)

Donor acceptor concept: acid-base and redox reactions can be described as proton or electron transfers, respectively (acid strength, pH, oxidation numbers)

Energy concept: All chemical processes are linked with transfer of energy (enthalpy, entropy)

Size concept: material and energy flows can be described quantitatively (atomic and molecular mass, concept of mole, stoichiometry)

Equilibrium concept: Reversible chemical reactions lead to a dynamic equilibrium state (equilibrium constant, influencing the chemical equilibrium)

Assessment and permitted materials

To get a certificate of this course it is required to complete an oral exam.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

In this tutorial the basic concepts of chemistry, which are required for the study courses "Chemistry" and "Teaching of Chemistry" will be repeated in a concise way. We will also discuss common misconceptions.
