Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Bioinorganic Chemistry is an interdisciplinary research area and deals with all aspects of metals and their biological functions, e.g., oxygen transport, metal based drugs, toxicity of metals, photosynthesis, etc. A general introduction in bioinorganic chemistry will be followed by a discussion of the role of metals in the nature (including alkali and earth alkali elements) and of metals used in medicine and toxicological relevance. In a major part of the lecture metal centers in enzymes will be discussed and also the relevance of metals in photosynthesis or in vitamin B12. In parallel, basics in coordination chemistry will be repeated complemented by analytical methods in bioinorganic chemistry.
Assessment and permitted materials
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The course shall provide insight into the central role of coordination compounds in nature, and point out the potential for application as drugs. Selected examples will lead the students to the understanding of fascinating processes occurring in bioinorganic chemistry.
